Fundraising for a local elementary school with open cash bar-wrong message.

In Barrington RI where we have a very high level of underage substance use, I just saw a flyer in a public space promoting a fundraiser for an elementary school at a yacht club with an open cash bar. So many things wrong with this scenario. First of all, can't parents in Barrington socialize without alcohol? Secondly what type of message does this advertisement promote? Do we really need elementary schools fundraising in this fashion. Yes, the people who will be purchasing tickets and drinking alcohol will be of legal age. The problem is with the example being set. If children are raised in a cocktail party mentality how is it we are surprised when they end up participating in alcohol use in Junior High. And it is not like this everywhere as some parents in Barrington RI love to claim. I am 56 years old and I have never attended a cocktail party myself so it is entirely possible to enjoy friends who do not entertain in this fashion. Fundraising for an elementary school should not partner with alcohol, it just sends the wrong message. Lead by example and #walkthetalk
