Joel H. Sekeres, 72

He was a political reporter, columnist and editor for the Providence Journal and the RI Supreme Court.

Joel H. Sekeres, of 2 Spinnaker Drive, Barrington, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at home. He was 72.

He was the husband of Bonnie (Simon) Sekeres for 47 years. Born in New York City, he was a son of the late George and Bessie (Goldshine) Sekeres.

He lived in Barrington for 17 years, previously residing in Providence. He was a political reporter, columnist and section editor for the Providence Journal for more than 32 years, retiring in 1996. After his retirement, he was an editor for the RI Supreme Court.

Sekeres was brought up one block from Yankee Stadium. He was an enthusiastic sports fan, especially for the New York Yankees and the New York Giants. He was also an avid art enthusiast.

He was the father of Caleb Sekeres and his wife, Young Kyoung Kim, of South Korea and Mikkael Sekeres and his wife, Jennifer, of Shaker Heights, Ohio. He was the grandfather of Gabriel, Samantha and Silas.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 am in Temple Am David,  40 Gardiner St., Warwick.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to the American Heart Association or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Shiva will be observed at his late residence today from 7-9 pm and Tuesday, Jan. 29, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Arrangements are being handled by by Shalom Memorial Chapel, Cranston.
