YMCA Lifeguards 1st Responders at Senior Prom

Three Barrington High School students put their life-saving skills to work when another student became incapacitated due to diabetic seizure.

It was at a Barrington High School post-prom event on May 17 that a student succumbed to a low-blood sugar incident, which rapidly devolved into a diabetic seizure. First on the scene were students Catie Silva, Liam Jackson and Sam Reitsma -- also prom attendees -- who treated the ailing student appropriately until rescue personnel arrived. All three are lifeguards at the Bayside YMCA.

“We are so proud of these young people,” said Bayside Y Executive Director Joe Martino, “and it is a real testament to our staff and the training they receive. You never know when you might be able to come to the assistance of someone in distress; maybe even save a life.”
