Imagine Luminaries Glowing All Over Barrington

'Light Up the Night in Barrington' is Dec. 21; it will piggyback again on the national event held each year on the winter solstice.

Another "luminary night" is coming to Barrington on Dec. 21 – the date of the winter solstice.

“Light Up the Night” is held every year on the winter solstice in communities all across the country, said Kim Parkhurst, who is coordinating luminary night in Barrington for the Friends of the Bay Spring Community Center.

The goal of the second annual event is to have neighbors throughout Barrington line their driveways, walkways and entryways with luminaries as "a simple and beautiful display of warmth and good will and to show our unity as a community," said Parkhurst.

“We are looking forward to growing the luminary night event each year until the entire town lights up,” she said.

Luminary night also will help to raise funds for the recently reopened Bay Spring Community Center and to make people aware of the space available at the Narragansett Avenue facility and the programs taking place there, she said.

“We are distributing and selling luminaries through a number of avenues,” Parkhurst said. “We have what we call neighborhood captains who are selling luminaries door to door or dropping off order forms to their neighbors.  We then deliver luminaries to the neighborhood captain for distribution.”

The organization is seeking more captains to help with ordering and delivery, she said.

“We have a number of local stores who have a stash of luminaries to sell,” she said. “We will be selling luminaries at the Festival of Lights on Saturday night.”

Luminaries also will be sold at the artisan craft event and Local Brew Coffeehouse scheduled for the community center after the Festival of Lights on Saturday.

A single luminary kit contains 5 white luminary bags, 5 tea lights and sand.  Each kit sells for $10.

To order your luminary kits, visit the table to be set up at the Festival of Lights in front of Town Hall between 4 and 5:30 pm. Or go to the Friends of the Bay Spring Community Center’s Facebook page for the list of local stores selling the luminary kits.
