Festival of Lights Like Never Before

18,000 new LED lights blanket the pine tree and the maple trees in front of Barrington Town Hall.

For a few seconds, there was an unexpected darkness. Then the annual Festival of Lights in front of Barrington Town Hall on Saturday, Dec. 7, definitely lit up the sky like never before.

Santa Claus led a countdown and then -- for a couple of seconds -- the new 18,000 LED lights didn't seem to want to turn on. Christmas Vacation movie, anyone?

Nope. The darkness did generate a few chuckles. But when they did turn, there was plenty of cheering and applause, and let's just say that the new lights could be seen from much farther away than at any time in the past.

The new lights were strung on the maple trees in front of Town Hall as well as the pine tree. They definitely surprised the hundreds of people who came out for the annual tree-lighting event, as promised by Michele Geremia, director of parks and recreation.

"And we plan to keep adding to the lights in years to come," she said.
