Today is Presidents' Day – a federal holiday on the third Monday of February designated to celebrate the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln -- two of America's most renowned Presidents.

Not everythings is shut down today, though. For many businesses, in fact, it will be business as usual.

Banks vary, although today is considered a banking holiday. Citizens, Sovereign, BankNewport and Bank of America in Barrington are closed but the ATMs are open. You can still bank at Webster and TD Bank.

Retail stores and most restaurants that serve on Mondays are open. So is the Shaw’s supermarket.

RIPTA will be operating busses on its regular schedule.

The Bayside YMCA is open with the start of special school vacatin week activities.

We figured no trash pick-up today, as did most of my neighbors, but the Mega truck just drove by. Why pick-up on this holiday, but not others?

Same thing happened on Veteran's Day Friday for us. They did come by the following business day, though. I tried contacting Mega & could not get through due to the holiday closure of the office. On the same note, the town says garbage out by 7:30am, but Mega comes by just after 7 some mornings. Perhaps the Patch can work on clarifying these matters with Mega. DPW never answers their phone anymore.

You are right - they just came through again. Of course, we assumed yesterday was it and once again did not put our trash out. Oh well. :) That's frustrating about the 7am pick-up. We try to put the trash out the night before, but typically I'm out there in the cold morning lugging everything out as quickly as possible.
