If you are able-bodied and willing, Serve Rhode Island is recruiting volunteers to shovel snow for elderly, disabled and other residents in need.

During the last snowstorm, 35 volunteers served 66 Rhode Island residents who called for assistance, according to the Serve Rhode Island website.

Volunteers can register through www.serverhodeisland.org under “Winter Storm Update, Sign up to be a Snow/Ice volunteer.” Volunteers will be asked to provide a photo identification and permission to do a background check.

People in need of assistance should call United Way’s 211 line and state where and when they need help with snow removal. The Serve Rhode Island staff will match volunteers with people seeking assistance as requests come in.
