State Senator Playing Blackjack for Charity

Sen. David Bates, who represents Barrington, Bristol and Riverside, is playing in the Twin River Casino Holiday Blackjack Tournament.

Sen. David Bates is playing blackjack for charity at the Twin River Casino this afternoon, Dec. 10.

Bates, who represents District 32 (Barrington, Bristol and Riverside), is one of six senators and eight representatives participating in the inaugural Twin River Casino Holiday Blackjack Tournament. Each legislator and the other players in the tournament is playing for a favorite charity.

Bates’s charity of choice is Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Rhode Island. The blackjack games begin at 12:30 pm.

John F. Taylor Jr., chairman of the Twin River Casino board of directors, said the tournament has been scheduled during the holiday season as “a meaningful way to continue our philanthropic outreach.” 

Taylor said the plan is to make it an annual event.

The players will play a few hands of blackjack until a winner is determined at each of six opening-round tables. The top six qualifiers will earn a seat at the championship table and will play one more round of blackjack.

A total of $60,000 will be donated by Twin River to the designated charities. Each organization will receive at least $1,000.
