Storm Abates a Bit as Sun Sets

With the wind and rain from Hurricane Sandy's sideswipe of Rhode Island winding down Monday evening, 166 Barrington homes had no electricity. And there was no indication from National Grid when power would be restored.

The power outages were scattered all over town: four in Hampden Meadows, one in Rumstick, one in town center, two on Nayatt Road, one off of Middle Highwas, and the largest one in the southeast corner of Lincoln Avenue and Washington Road. 

The latter involved 93 of the 166 customers, according to the National Grid power outage map.

Meanwhile, a high tide expected to be 4 to 7 feet higher than normal was creeping into coastal Barrington as the sun set around 6:15 pm. High tide was set for 8:35 pm.

Three of the final five holes on the south side of Nayatt Road at Rhode Island Country Club were being flooded with water.

Homes along Willow Way on the water's edge in West Barrington were slowly being surrounded by water. They tiny beach at the end of Annawamscutt Road was submerged.

The boat ramp at Haines Memorial Park at Bullock's Cove was under water; the parking lot was about half covered. Several homes on the cove definitely seemed to be threatened by flooding.

Only when the sun rises on Tuesday morning will the extent of the flooding be known.
