Rebuilding Elevator Comes With Ups, Downs

Work on rebuilding the elevator is expected to be completed by the end of next week; then comes the state inspection.

Workers for the Schindler Elevator Company expect to finish rebuilding the 30 to 40 year old lift in the Barrington library by the end of next week.

Then, it will be up to Rhode Island's only elevator inspector to come in and approve the work. That will probably push the reopening of the library's only elevator to around Valentine's Day, according to one of the two Schindler workers on the job Thursday afternoon, Jan. 23.

The state used to have five inspectors; over the years, even as more elevators were installed, the number of inspectors was cut to one, according to the Schindler worker.

In the meantime, you should call the library if you are unsure about your ability to get to the top floor. A stairwell is the only access until the rebuilding work is finished.
