Firefighters Douse Mattress Fire

Bedroom in home at 20 Bullock Ave. in Sowams School neighborhood damaged; one occupant taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

Barrington firefighters doused a mattress fire in a bedroom at a home on Bullock Avenue early Thursday afternoon, Jan. 16.

One occupant of the home was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for smoke inhalation-related injuries. Two other occupants refused treatment, according to Barrington Fire Lt. Scott Carroll.

Barrington firefighters responded about 12:15 pm and found heavy smoke in the bedroom. The fire was put out and firefighters left the ranch-style home in the Sowams School neighborhood in about an hour. An investigation into the cause of the fire is not completed.

Damage was confined to the bedroom. The mattress, a box-spring, books and assorted items of clothing and other bedroom items sustained fire and water damage. The items were pulled out into the front yard where they remained at mid-afternoon.

Power to the house at 20 Bullock Ave. was never turned off. It remains livable, said Carroll.

Firefighters with Engine 1 and Engine 2 and EMTs with Rescue 1 responded. East Providence was called as well. The fire was out before East Providence arrived and they were called back, said Carroll.
