[VIDEO] 'T-Rex' Chews Apart YMCA

Demolition of the indoor pool area starts the expansion of the Bayside YMCA in Barrington; the rest of the building remains open to members.

It was kind of like watching a Tyrannosaurus rex chew apart a building in a monster movie.

A wrecking crew for New England Construction went to work this morning, Aug. 30, tearing down the indoor pool area of the Bayside YMCA in Barrington. The sounds of the wood being splintered by the jaws of the excavator drew ears and eyes from 50 yards away.

The demolition and cleanup will take several days, said Carl Brown, project manager for the Bayside YMCA expansion project. The indoor pool will then be filled to make way for construction crews.

The existing facility will remain open as the first phase of the expansion project – construction of the new Aquatics Center – takes place.

“We know it is an inconvenience for our members,” said Sandi Carney, fundraising manager. “But by building it one phase at a time, we could keep the building open.”

Carney said that fundraising for the $6.7 million expansion will pick up again in the fall. The YMCA has raised about $5.9 million so far.
