Rock-a-Baby Introduces Music to Kids

Small music company's classes entertain and educate children at the same time with their parents in tow.

Rock-a-Baby music is playing in Barrington soon.

Want to introduce your baby or toddler or four-year-old to music? Consider a music class with Rock-a-Baby. You can listen and learn at the same time.

“We introduce children to music,” said Stephanie Trachtenberg, of Pawtucket, who runs the company with her musician husband, Mark Trachtenberg. “We blend education and entertainment at the same time.”

Rock-a-Baby has four locations in Rhode Island. Temple Habonim on New Meadow Road is their soon-to-be location in Barrington.

Mark is a teacher as well as a musician, Stephanie said. They launched the company in New York City and then decided to move back to Rhode Island while expanding the company with their move.

Mark works with two other musicians in the classes, which Stephanie said kind of puts children “in a band.”  The trio includes a keyboardist, a guitarist and a singer.

They also work with three puppets named Rhythm, Melody and Harmony.

“I do the marketing and publicity and things like that,” said Stephanie, who gave up a corporate job to team up with her husband in the music company.

“We have a variety of genres,” she said, from classic to rap to rock and roll. Each week has a theme with matching music.

Children from 4 months to 4 years attend 45-minute classes with parents in 12-week sessions.  Classes typically are limited to 10-12 children.

“Parents don’t have to participate if they don’t want to,” Stephanie said, “they can sit and watch.”

But it’s a lot more fun if parents do enjoy the music with their children, she said.

To introduce Rock-a-Bay to Barrington, Stephanie said, “demonstrations are scheduled for Aug. 22 and Aug. 30 at the temple."
