'Bookstore Starting 'Tweens' Book Club

Barrington Books is launching a book club specifically for children between the ages of 9-12.

Barrington Books is starting a new book club for “tweens” – children from ages 9 to 12.

The concept for the club, named “I Heart Reading,” was inspired by the 10-year-old daughter of store manager Jennifer Massotti.

“Olivia is always looking for age-appropriate yet challenging books to read,” she Massotti.

Barrington Books hopes to encourage reading by “tweens” like Olivia with the book club, she said. The club should give them “a platform for reflection and conversation all their own in a fun, no-pressure environment,” she said.

There is no charge for the book club. It will meet monthly beginning Sunday, Oct. 28, at 11 am in the children’s section of the bookstore in the Barrington Shopping Plaza.

Refreshments will be served and parents are welcome to participate, said Massotti.

The discussion for the first book club meeting will be on The Land of Stories – a middle-grade adventure written by Chris Colfer of the hit television show “Glee.”

Here is a review of the book:

Alex and Conner Bailey's world is about to change, in this fast-paced adventure that uniquely combines our modern day world with the enchanting realm of classic fairy tales.

The Land of Stories tells the tale of twins Alex and Conner. Through the mysterious powers of a cherished book of stories, they leave their world behind and find themselves in a foreign land full of wonder and magic where they come face-to-face with the fairy tale characters they grew up reading about.

But after a series of encounters with witches, wolves, goblins, and trolls alike, getting back home is going to be harder than they thought.
