Lacrosse, Basketball Players Sign to Play in College

Five seniors at Barrington High School sign letters of intent to play college lacrosse and basketball.

Four senior lacrosse teammates who have been playing together for about 10 years and one senior basketball player from Barrington High School signed together on Friday afternoon, Nov. 15, National Letters of Intent to play in college.

At a special ceremony in the high school library, Kate Clancy signed to play at the University of New Hampshire, Mary Kate Coogan signed to play at Colgate University, Cameron MacDonald signed to play at The College of William and Mary, and Madeline Soutter all signed to play lacrosse at Boston College. Maura Kelty signed to play basketball at Caldwell College. The first four colleges play Division I sports; Caldwell plays at the Division II level.

"This a very special afternoon," said George Finn, the BHS athletics director. "We as a high school are very proud to have five members of the senior class who will be signing their letters of intent to go on to college and play athletics."

"And as the director of athletics," he said. "I'm certainly very proud of watching them play for the past three years."

The four lacrosse players are a special story. They began playing organized lacrosse together about 10 years ago when they were in second grade, said Madline. They were part of a group of 23 girls in the East Bay that were split into four teams to compete against each other at the under-11 level.

Their individual team went on to become the first team from Rhode Island ever to compete in the Massachusetts Recreational Girls Lacrosse League.  At the time, the only organized girls lacrosse program began at the Middle School level, said Finn.

The best friends playing together for the RI Rip Tides and Metacomet Lacrosse clubs.  In high school, all four girls started on the Barrington High School varsity lacrosse team as freshmen, made it to the state championship finals in their freshman and sophomore years, and won the state championship together last spring as juniors. They continue to compete locally and nationally with the Mass Elite Lacrosse Club.

The accomplishments of all the girls reach beyond the lacrosse field, though, said Finn. They are all multi-sport athletes, honor students and  active members of the Student Council and a variety of interscholastic clubs.

"Just look at the colleges they are attending," said Finn. "Outstanding colleges academically and athletically."
