Curtain Going Up on Barrington Community Theater's Winter Session

Auditions for winter session will be held next Monday, Jan. 6.

Auditions for the winter session of the Barrington Community Theatre will be held next Monday, Jan. 6.

The community theater is run in partnership with the Barrington Recreation Department. In its 13th year, the community theater offers opportunities for students to both perform and direct theater.

Barrington Community Theatre presents between 25 and 50 plays each year, with an emphasis on learning and allowing as many students as possible to experience not only supporting roles, but also the coveted “lead,” according to Kelly McCabe, executive director of the community theater.

Unlike many programs throughout the state, McCabe said, Barrington Community Theatre allows for students to do multiple plays in the same session.

"Our philosophy has always been that students learn not only from being the lead in a play, where the focus is on them with their peers supporting them, but also from playing a supporting role themselves, sometimes only an hour later.” said McCabe, who has been with the program since 2006.

"We feel that it promotes a sense of equality and camaraderie as well as allowing the students to really appreciate how important every role can be,” she said.

Students from grades 3 through 12 learn about theatre as they rehearse short plays that they perform in a festival format at the end of the session.
McCabe describes the community theater as a "supportive and accepting environment suitable to any experience level; whether it be trying theatre for the first time or honing skills that are already there – even prepping for college auditions," said McCabe.

The session starts 6 pm next Monday at the Barrington Middle School on Middle Highway. Rehearsals for the session will be held predominantly on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Performances will take place on March 21 and 22 at the Barrington Public Library.

Sign-up sheets can be found online, in the recreation department office, or in the Town Manager’s office. Sheets should be returned to the Town Manager's office before the start of the session.
