Did you know that every 15 seconds and older adult (65+) is seen in a hospital emergency department for a fall-related injury?  Among older adults falls are the leading cause of injury death.  They are also the most common cause of non-fatal injuries, and hospital admissions for trauma.

There are a few simple ways to prevent falls. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review medicines, both prescription and over the counter to identify medicines that may cause dizziness.  Have your eyes checked and update glasses.  Make homes safe by adding grab bars to the inside and outside of tub or shower, and next to the toilet.  If stairs don’t already have handrails add them, and make sure everything is well lit.

However, one of the best ways to prevent falls is to participate in regular exercise.  The YMCA of Greater Providence has classes and programs geared specifically at those who have fallen or may be at risk for falling.

A Matter of Balance, a nationally recognized program designed to reduce the fear and risk of falling while increasing the activity level of older adults concerned about falls is the ideal class.  A Matter or Balance focuses on increasing strength and improving balance. During the class participants learn to control their fear of falling, set realistic goals for increasing activity, and enjoy an exercise routine to increase strength and balance. Participants who complete A Matter of Balance and live with chronic diseases are encouraged to join the Living Well Rhode Island disease self-management program.  Tai Chi is a highly recommended exercise for those looking to improve their fitness and balance, and the YMCA offers the Tai Chi: Moving for Better Balance program.

September 22, 2013 is Falls Prevention Awareness Day.  The YMCA of Greater Providence will honor the day by working with as many participants as possible to provide tips to avoiding falls and staying healthy.
