Cash For Park's 'Final Plan' OKd

The Barrington Town Council approves $60,000 for the development of a 'final plan' for Police Cove park to be sent to CRMC and DOT for approvals.

Another step has been taken to create a park at Police Cove in Barrington. The Town Council approved on Monday night a new $60,000 contract with the consulting firm, Vanasse Hanglin Brustlin, that has been working with the Police Cove Park Committee. Land-use specialist Steve Derderian of VHB will now take the preferred concept plan presented to the Town Council in March and complete a “final plan” for submission to the Coastal Resources Management Council and the RI Department of Transportation, which need to approve the plan. The final plan also will be used to bid out the construction of the park, estimated at around $750,000. At the same time, the boat ramp at Police Cove used in the warm weather months by fire rescue boats will be …

'Real Diel' Campaign Off, Running

Barrington Republican Fred Diel, who calls himself the 'Real Diel', officially launches his campaign for the District 66 House seat in Barrington and Riverside.

Barrington Republican Fred Diel made it official early last evening – he is running for the District 66 State House seat that represents part of Barrington and Riverside. Diel launched his campaign in front of a gathering of leading Republicans at Billy’s restaurant in Barrington. Among those wishing him well were former gubernatorial candidate John Robitaille, Barrington state Sen. David Bates and RI Republican Party Chair Mark Zaccaria. Standing not far from the podium were Diel’s wife, Kimberly, and 9-year-old daughter, Katrina. He mentioned his daughter as a principal reason why he is running for the General Assembly. “When my daughter graduates from college, I want her to have a good job and stay in Rhode Island,” he said, emphasizing…

Residents Voice Anger Over Proposed Tolls

State officials told the crowd that fees on the Mount Hope or Sakonnet River bridges are unavoidable to maintain the spans.

Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority Chairman David Darlington hadn't yet made it through the second slide of his presentation when the questions started. East Bay and Aquidneck Island residents peppered Darlington and Department of Transportation Director Michael Lewis with pointed questions and comments, most opposing proposed tolls on the Mount Hope and Sakonnet River bridges, throughout a forum last night at the Burnside Building on Hope Street in Bristol. The response was not an unexpected development, Darlington said. Residents have come out in force at previous public hearings on the proposal that would bring tolls to the Mount Hope Bridge for the first time since 1998. The fees to cross the bridge — if the General Assembly …

@ Jack No the state won't lose it's revenue because you and the tourists will pay for the bridges. Anyone on the island not sucking on the hind tit of the Navy/Government will be suffering anyway: RI's brand of subsidized tourism enriches the few and enslaves the poor in minimum wage jobs, meanwhile the dwindling middle class pays the third highest water rates on the East coast as its property …   more ›

Councilors Work Over Leases For Land

The Barrington Town Council meeting Monday evening is dominated by leases for Haines Memorial State Park, Vitullo Farm, Four Town Farm and a potential solar field.

Four leases for land in Barrington dominated the Town Council meeting Monday night. The first lease involves Haines Memorial State Park. The councilors voted unanimously to seek another one-year lease for the playing fields and dog park at the park. The current one-year lease for the park expires May 23. The only cost to the town is for maintenance and upkeep – approximately $33,200 a year, according to Public Works Director Alan Corvi. The second lease is for the property known as Vitullo Farm off of Wampanoag Trail. The councilors voted 4-0 to approve a one-year lease with Robert Vitullo and Marion Viera, the former owners of the property who have been leasing the 21.5-acre site since selling it to the town in 2003. They still farm the …

Four Town Farm is a treasure for residents in the East Bay. Too many farms are disappearing to development. It is hard and risky work. I am thankful that the pieces are in place for the farm to continue serving the community for the long term.   more ›

Is The Free Ride Over?

A forum at the Burnside Building tonight at 7 addresses concerns over proposed fees for the Mount Hope and Sakonnet River bridges.

Since 1998, Barrington drivers — anyone on the East Bay — have had the option to get onto Aquidneck Island without paying the tolls the Newport Bridge charges. The free ride could soon be coming to an end and crossing onto the island may soon cost drivers money regardless of the route they take. The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority hopes so. The authority — which already approved raising rates on the Newport Pell Bridge — has proposed adding fees to the Mount Hope and Sakonnet River bridges. The tolls would range from 52 cents to $3.25 each way. The Newport bridge is scheduled to increase from $4 to $5 for cash-paying drivers. Those using an E-Z pass pay less than $1. Residents have voiced strong opposition to the plan and East …

Hey does anyone truly believe that thses tolls if enacted will actually go & be used where we are told? This state syphons money from everywhere to do other projects etc than what those funds were intended. Example: The $7.00 charge for a saltwater license went to creating a few more management positions & to purchase vehicles: The state syphoned $ out of the retirement system to give huge …   more ›

Solar Field, Haines Lease on Agenda

Barrington Town Council meets today at 7 pm; development of power-generating solar field and renewal of Haines Park lease among items on the agenda.

At its delayed May meeting tonight, the Town Council will hear a proposal to develop a power-generating solar field at a landfill on Upland Way to generate revenue for the town. The Town Council also will be asked tonight to renew the lease agreement for Haines Memorial State Park. The councilors also will be asked to take action on two other leases: a one-year extension on the lease for Vitullo Farm off of Wampanoag Trail, and a vote at the Financial Town Meeting next week on a proposed extension of the lease that allows Four Town Farm to farm town land in the Nockum Hill area. Tonight’s meeting starts at 7 in the Council Chamber in Town Hall. It was rescheduled from last Monday because it was not posted on the RI Secretary of State's …

Barrington's Fred Diel Eyes State House

The lifelong conservative Republican to officially declare on Monday his candidacy for the District 66 House seat held by Barrington's Joy Hearn.

Manfred "Fred" Diel says: “It’s all about the economy. If you fix it, all of the other things will come around.” And Diel believes that the turn-around will start by bringing manufacturing jobs back to Rhode Island. “Then the manufacturers will hire full-time employees, which automatically brings in tax revenue with payroll taxes and decreases the state’s unemployment rate,” he said. Diel, a Republican, is running for the District 66 seat in the state House, which represents parts of Barrington and Riverside. He will officially kick off his campaign for the seat held right now by Joy Hearn of Barrington on Monday, May 14. He has scheduled a 5 pm kickoff event at Billy’s restaurant on Maple Avenue.  “It is time for a new beginning,” said …

Budget Proposed With No Tax Hike

The Committee on Appropriations presents a $61.9 million spending plan for Barrington schools, municipal services and capital projects that calls for no increase in the tax rate.

Expect no tax hike in Barrington this year -- maybe. The Committee on Appropriations presented a no-tax-hike budget proposal Wednesday evening at the annual hearing on Barrington’s spending for schools, municipal services and capital expenses in fiscal year 2013. That $61.9 million proposed budget could change a bit – and create a small tax hike -- at the annual Financial Town Meeting on May 23 if supporters of keeping a wood shop teacher present an amendment to change the spending plan. Eliminating the industrial arts teacher, a decision made by the School Committee and administration to help trim the school budget, was a main point of contention at the hearing after Kathy Cadigan, chair of the COA, delightfully introduced the proposed …

Tonight's monthly meeting of the Barrington Town Council has been rescheduled to next Monday, May 14.

Tonight's monthly meeting of the Barrington Town Council has been postponed until next Monday, May 14. Town Clerk Linda James said the meeting was rescheduled because it was not posted on the Secretary of State's website. The agenda for the meeting was posted on the Barrington town website and in the Town Hall and library. But open meeting laws mandate that it be posted on the state website as well.
