Saturday, May 19, is the fifth annual event to kick off the 2012 boating season; Brewer's Cove Haven Marina in Barrington hosts the event.
Harbormasters in Barrington and East Providence present their fifth annual Boating Safety Day on Saturday, May 19. Brewer’s Cove Haven Marina on Narragansett Avenue in Barrington next door to Haines Memorial State Park is the host. The event serves as a kick-off to the 2012 boating season. The event runs from 10 am to 2 pm — rain or shine. Land exhibits will move indoors if it rains. “Fifteen unique boats at the docks will provide on-the-water experiences,” said Barrington Harbormaster Raymond Sousa. He describes the experiences as “fun and a boating education for children and adults as they climb aboard high technology-laced rescue craft from the Coast Guard and fire department. You’ll also see firefighting and rescue boats, and boat …

The Barrington Business Association plans two events: a showcase for artists over the course of the summer and a festival in October.
The Barrington Business Association put some meat on the bones of two events coming up down the road at its monthly meeting Tuesday night, May 8. Beginning on the last Thursday in July, the merchants’ group will launch an “Artisans Night” to showcase local artists and their works. Artists will be invited to set up shop in Barrington stores from 7 to 9 pm in an attempt to attract customers for their works and the host stores. “Artisans Night” will then continue through October on the last Thursday in each month until the fall. Final details will be worked out over the next few weeks. A date for a “Fall Festival” was finalized. It will be held on Oct. 13. The festival will center around Barrington’s town hall, library and senior center with …
Five warranty deeds were recorded in Barrington Town Hall last week for homes changing owners; the highest number in a couple of months.
Five warranty deeds that showed an exchange of properties from a seller to a buyer were recorded in the Town Hall last week, April 29 to May 5. The sale prices can give you some idea of the price of Barrington properties in the current real estate market, particularly in the Rumstick, Hampden Meadows, and Upland Way neighborhoods. Want to see what properties are still for sale out there? Watch for House HUNT on Friday's Patch.

Matthew Amaral cuts a ribbon at his store, Grapes & Grains, courtesy of the East Bay Chamber of Commerce; it opened about six weeks ago.
“It’s still a dream come true,” said Matthew Amaral late Wednesday afternoon at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for his Barrington liquor store. Amaral finally got around to cutting a ribbon at Grapes & Grains after a bit more than six weeks in business on Bosworth Street. The ribbon was held between the two doorways to the wine room. The East Bay Chamber of Commerce actually arranged the ceremony as a networking event. It’s something the chamber tries to do for a new business once a month, said Suzanne Munroe, administrative assistant at the chamber. Amaral opened the store on March 27. But the first day was more of a family celebration, not a grand opening. See the Patch story on the opening. Approximately 50-60 chambers members sent in RSVPs…

There has been little negative reaction to Barrington's sign ordinances since the issue was raised at the April meeting of the business association.
Do merchants think it is time to revisit Barrington’s sign ordinances or not? The town’s sign ordinances, often viewed as less than friendly to merchants, became an issue at the April meeting of the Barrington Business Association. But since then the complaints levied at that meeting seem to have fallen by the wayside. Holly Smith of Hollies on the Avenue, co-president of the business association, said at the May meeting of the association Tuesday night, that an email she distributed to members of the association brought no responses. Smith said in her email: “We will meet with the Town of Barrington sometime in June. We would like to bring with us ideas, recommendations, and ‘war’ stories of getting proper signage in town. If you cannot …

Barrington Rep. Joy Hearn's bill to ban people under 21 from entering alcohol-serving nightclubs was up for a hearing yesterday — do you think it will work?
Saying that allowing people under age 21 to go to nightclubs that serve alcohol is "a breeding ground for trouble," state Rep. Joy Hearn (D-Barrington, East Providence) has introduced a bill to stop the practice. No under-21 nightclubs exist in the East Bay, but Hearn has always believed that allowing underage people into clubs just asks for trouble. Of course, underage drinking is always a concern for local law enforcement. Hearn's bill was scheduled for a hearing by the House Judiciary Committee yesterday afternoon. "I’ve introduced this bill before, but never has this been a more critical problem than it is today with all of the violence happening at our nightclubs," Hearn said in a press release. Hearn noted the recent violence at a …
