Affordable Housing

Some thoughts for  my fellow residents:

It has been a few weeks since the Presidential election.  It has been long enough for all who voted to acquiesce to the results of same.  Some will be happy and some not so - however, the populous has spoken and now all must work together.

Speaking of populous - it appears that the majority of the voters in Town voted against Proposition #7 - Affordable Housing Bonds.

That said, it sends a MANDATE to the members of the Town Council.

It is time to step up to change or amend the State Affordable Housing Law as it pertains to Barrington.

That Barrington MUST build NEW homes to make our quota

That Barrington needs 600 + homes for affordable/low income buyers or renters.

That Barrington will absorb losses to developers.

That Barrington will subsidize taxes for buyers

That every piece of existing vacant land in Barrington must have a percentage of affordable housing available, if developed.

We are a small town with limited space - if not careful we will have "housing developments" on every sq.ft. of land --- and still ----

NO ROOM FOR OUR SENIORS

Those of you who have been entrusted with our welfare, please start doing your job for us and address this situation with the State of RI

I think you will find many residents that will help the cause.

Well stated. Also, why don't we call the housing what it really is. Taxpayer subsidised housing.

I would probably love to live in Monaco or Luxembourg, but I can't afford to, so I live in Barrington. No one has a God-given right to live in a specific community. And we all work hard to get the things we want, including housing. There are plenty of homes valued at, and even for sale for $150,000 and under in this town. Those should absolutely be counted as affordable housing already. The way in which this law is being interpreted is ridiculous. You missed your chance to have different town officials elected, Barrington. What a shame...

Could someone please publish the names and email addresses of who can influence this issue at state level? I think many of us could use some coaching on tackling this - glad to send emails, etc. We can't expect David Bates to do this all on his own. Also, we need to get rid of single lever in this state and convince people it's ok to vote outside the party that their mothers and fathers voted for. Simply party loyalty (not candidate loyalty) allows many incumbents to get back in, even if they're not earning their jobs. Times have changed, but much of RI stays mired in its old ways. Very sad.

Local Mom- I think we are past the point of no return. The 'takers' out number the "contributors." If our state is ever going to be succssful it will not be in our lifetime

Local Mom - you have just hit the nail on the head ! It is time for voters to be independent from "party vote" and think about consequences of their votes. Read below:
When I attended the meeting in the Library on Tuesday evening I was shocked to discover that Palmer Pointe will sit on precious WATERFRONT land !!
The tenants of this complex will have the pleasure of taking a chair, walking down a path to the waterfront and enjoy their morning coffee as the sun rises over Barrington. No worry about paying taxes, we are doing that for them.
Or, perhaps a kayak or canoe trip launched from the shore of the Palmer River on a warm summer night. No worry about paying taxes, we are doing that for them.
Or, a cooling swim, picnic on the shore, perhaps fishing in the quiet waters! No worry about paying taxes, we are doing that for them !!
I had no idea that the waterfront on that property would be included in the deal with EBCDC. I always believed it was protected conservation land.
Apparently not !!
No wonder there is a "waiting list" for the project.
The Town Counsel approved that property for moderate/low income housing -
If it had been developed with single family homes it would add to our tax base, not rob us of it !!
Whom ever signed that agreement with EBCDC has truly "sold us down the river".

It is time for the voters and residence of Barrington to realize that they voted for the same old political officials and policies. Socialism. Our states affordable housing act is in lock step with the United Nations Agenda 21 sustainable development policy. Please go to following link and read for yourself. www.americanpolicy.org/agenda21

Part 1

I figure I will be lambasted for this opinion as usual. Fred is absolutely correct. This is a Perfect example that has been going on in this Country for too long. This is not a recent development in this Country. It is exactly what the Shoe banging premier of Russia predicted. Consider how Russia controlled the people. The built many large apartment complexes to house people close to factories and farms of the government collective. In the 50's they increased this tenfold or more.

They forbid gun ownership and paid very little wages. They limited food production to keep it scarce but increased alcohol production to keep the people in an uncaring stupor. Entertainment was limited to those in the party as the average citizen could not afford it. There were no middle classes of society. It was Party members and the poor, nothing else. Yes the supposed cold war is over. But really is it? No it is now entrench in this Country with class warfare and yes Agenda21 is real.

I love how people say that is a conspiracy of falsehoods. They obviously have not read it. Most I have mentioned it to, do not even realize it was written in 1998. They think it is some story recently thought up by the right.

Part 2

The carbon taxes, Housing, Gun Control and much more are all in that. It has been a behind the scenes plan going on for a long time now. Only difference is now many are seeing it come to their front door across America. Those who are not vigilant are doomed to fall into the continuation of the so called Great Society when it first started in order to undermine America and take away all of its freedom and Burn the Constitution. Not an opinion but rather realities for those who have their eyes open.

It is only a matter of when it will be in full force and the destruction of the American way of life will be destroyed, or at least an attempt will be made. I have faith that we have enough people to beat them back an out of existence for these treasonist action that are clearly what the Founders foresaw as Ben Franklin said. “ We have given you a Republic, if you can hold on to it”.

On a side note to those who think this is way to over blown. Consider this LBJ's great society did nothing more than what the Government did to Native American's. Kept them on controled reservation in proverty with social programs that drained the will to be productive and advance in society. Sadly the vast majority o f them fell into this and are still in it today. This was also done to our minorty polulation particuarly the Blacks. It is not racist to speak the truth. A welfare Society in such a large section is doomed to break the back of the workers who pay for it when the workers become the minorty supplyers of taxes it goes bankrupt. This is quite evident today and right in front of our eyes.

The will and opportunity to succeed has been sucked out of citizens without many of them even realizing it. Once in the trap for generation's it is forgotten that self-responsibity builds a society of freedom and welfare States and Socialism destryed every Society in history eventially and will continue to do that. Morals and Faith belief systems removed from society take the will from the people to fight this tyranny and that is what is happening now also.

Again there is a War going on right under our noses against the American way of life and our Country which is the most sucessful society in history due to being a free Republic. We are not a democracy as that is nothing more than MOB RULE as the Founders so aptly stated. That is why they chose a Republic!!!!

no regr allia b- good comments. Well stated.
Most (not all) poor, needy, and minorities would like to be proud, independent, and able to provide for themselves and their families. Yet the progressive liberals think they need more social programs. Huge disconnect here.

Sad thing chris is, they cannot be blamed for the most part, because when it becomes generational it very hard to get them away from it when they system continues reward just taking the money instead of education and job training as a requirement for getting it. That has been gutted over the years. It was a great idea that was purposely set aside to continue what I wrote obviously ;-}.
