YMCA Indoor Pool Demolition Starts

The demolition of the indoor pool at the Bayside YMCA in Barrington begins today and is expected to finish Friday, Aug. 31, to make room for construction of the new Aquatics Center.

Renovations to the Bayside YMCA in Barrington continue today, Aug. 30, with the start of the demolition of the indoor pool to make way for a new, expanded Aquatics Center.

The contractor, New England Construction, has installed fences to limit access to the work area and protect YMCA members and neighbors, according to Hugh Minor, communications director for the YMCA of Greater Providence.

New routes have been established to offer safe access to the outdoor pool and child watch areas, Minor said. Signs are posted throughout the property to help with traffic flow.

In addition to the work on the Aquatics Center, renovations to the lobby and “welcome center” will make the entire facility accessible to people of all abilities, he said. Right now, there is minimal access to the ground floor for people with limited mobility.

All other activities at the YMCA will continue during construction of the Aquatics Center, including group exercise classes, the fitness center, and child care, Minor said.

Bayside YMCA members can use any YMCA in New England as part of the “My Y is Every Y” reciprocal agreement. The nearest YMCAs to Barrington include the Newman YMCA in Seekonk and the East Side/Mt. Hope YMCA in Providence

After project is completed, Bayside members will have:

  • A larger, six-lane pool plus an additional pool area with gradual entry and water-play features.
  • New men’s and women’s locker rooms, as well as family and special needs locker areas with private dressing rooms.
  • Full accessible facility including the expanded lobby and lounge.

My comment related to membership. I think that the Y should institute a membershp which is individual and partner/spouse. I think that membership and revenue would increase as a result, since two people do not want to pay for a family membership. As a result the Y is losing much business to local gyms, such as Healthtrax because of it. Also Healthtrax participates in some medical programs offering not only the membership for individual and partner/spouse but a discounted membership aiming towards a wellness program. I don't know if the Y can get involved in anything like that, but, again, I think membership and revenue would increase yet again. This is just the reality of today's working individual. Good luck with the new project.

Thank you for your comment, Marie. The Y does offer both couple and single person membership options. Check out all of our membership types at http://ymcagreaterprovidence.org/Membership/MembershipOverview/tabid/297/Default.aspx. For more information, call the Bayside Y at 401-245-2444.
