YMCA Expands Massage Programs

Bayside YMCA in Barrington adds a third massage therapist and a prenatal-massage program.

The Bayside YMCA in Barrington has upgraded its massage programs by adding another massage therapist and a prenatal-massage program.

Katherine Quinn, a licensed massage therapist, joins Emilie Ashton and Sonia Lima at the YMCA.  Quinn is a nationally certified therapist in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, according to Edna Kurtzman, a program coordinator.

The prenatal program offers expectant mothers a way to alleviate discomfort often associated with pregnancy, Kurtzman said.

Quinn specializes in Swedish-based massage, focusing on “target work and trigger point therapy,” said Kurtzman.

“Utilizing her firm knowledge of anatomy and body mechanics, coupled with a strong intuitive understanding of the body, Katherine creates individualized massage sessions which help to reduce pain, increase range of motion, and reduce stress,” she said.

“When not working as a massage therapist,” Kurtzman said, “Katherine enjoys practicing yoga, performing as a singer-songwriter, and being the mother of three wonderful kids.”

Massage can help healing, including from injuries related to sports or exercise, and can provide relief from chronic pain, according to the YMCA.

Rates for a one-hour massage are $50 for YMCA members and $80 for nonmembers. A half-hour massage is $25 for members and $40 for non-members.

You can also schedule a chair massage if you are not comfortable with removing your clothes. The rate is the same as for a half-hour massage.
