Woman Swipes Formula in Plastic Bags

A woman walked out of the Shaw's Supermarket on Sunday morning with baby formula she had poured into two white plastic grocery bags.

A woman who apparently is unaware of Barrington’s ban on using plastic grocery bags ran out of the Shaw’s Supermarket on Sunday morning, Jan. 13, with baby formula she had poured into two of the white bags.

The woman was described as about 5-5 with frizzy hair tucked under a cap and wearing a long coat, according to Barrington Police Chief John LaCross.

She was observed in an aisle removing 12 cans of the formula from a pack and placing them in a shopping basket. A store clerk apparently heard some unusual clicking noise in the aisle.

When the store manager approached her, the woman ran to the back of the store, LaCross said, where she emptied each of the cans into the plastic bags.

She then ran out of the store with the formula and drove away in a 4-door Honda Civic described as having duct tape on the hood but with no visible license plate, according to the police report.

The 12 cans have a value of $192 on the Shaw’s store shelf, LaCross said. Formula is sometimes used to mix with illegal drugs. It is often sold to other unscrupulous store owners for resale in their stores.
