What's Open, Closed on MLK Day?

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day -- a floating federal holiday.

Today is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day – a floating federal holiday on the third Monday of January designated to celebrate the renowned civil rights activist’s birthday on Jan. 15.

King is remembered for many achievements, but perhaps his most famous public address was his "I Have A Dream" speech on Aug. 28, 1963 in Washington, D.C., part of the historic March on Washington. See a video of the speech on the right.

But not everything is shutting down today. For many businesses, it will be business as usual.

All federal, state and municipal offices, such as the Barrington Town Hall, are closed for the holiday. There is no mail delivery.

The Barrington Public Schools and most day care centers in town are closed.

The Barrington Public Library is closed. So is the Barrington Senior Center and TAP-IN, which operate out of the library building.

Banks vary, although today is considered a banking holiday. Citizens, Sovereign, BankNewport and Bank of America in Barrington are closed but the ATMs are open.

Retail stores and most restaurants that serve on Mondays are open. So is the Shaw’s supermarket.

RIPTA will be operating busses on its holiday schedule.

The Bayside YMCA is open with all programs operating on their usual schedule.
