What would be the perfect tribute to the late John Gray, principal at Barrington High School for 29 years, who passed away a few weeks ago?

The Barrington School Committee has heard a number of suggestions. The members have decided to contact Gray’s family first before making a decision.

Superintendent Michael Messore said the most meaningful suggestions for “keeping his memory alive at the high school” include naming the auditorium or the library after Gray.

“John is noted for attending everything,” Messore said at last week’s School Committee meeting. “He never missed a concert.”

At the same time, Gray is widely recognized for his efforts to make the high school library as useful to students as possible.

“It’s also the heart of the school,” said Messore, which seems appropriate.

School Committee member Kate Brody said also has heard a recommendation for the auditorium from a parent.

“That’s the place where as parents they saw Gray for the first time,” she said. “They were introduced to John as the principal there.”

School Committee Chairman Patrick Guida said he feels that Gray’s family should play a key role in picking the “best idea to memorialize his legacy. We need to ask the family what’s appropriate.”

Messore said that high school Principal Joseph Hurley is expected to take the lead in coming up with a tribute that would be precedent-setting. Hurley did not attend last week's meeting.
