Trails Team to Walkabout Vets Park
Barrington's new Town Trails Team will walk through the eastern side of Veterans Memorial Park on Saturday, Dec. 1, to identify and plan future work to be done.
Join Barrington’s Town Trails Team on Saturday morning, Dec. 1, for a walkabout in Veterans Memorial Park.
The team plans to walk from 9 to 11 am through the eastern side of the park “to examine trails and wetlands in preparation for the next phase of park projects to improve trail conditions, close trails where needed and complete the new trail system,” said Beth Rondeau of the Barrington Land Conservation Trust.
“We will be walking off trail or in wet conditions as part of our review,” she said.
Dressing for the weather and the conditions is suggested. Wear sturdy shoes.
While you are in the park, you might want to check out the “rediscovered Red Trail,” Rondeau said, which members of the Land Trust have brought back to life.
“Dan Horne, Bob Read, Sandy Patrick, Susan Hoagland and Helen Tjader worked to clear fallen trees, trash and overgrowth from the trail,” she said. “Susan ID’d an invasive shrub laden with oval blue berries – privit.”
An Eagle Scout project will work this fall to remove more of the invasive plants along this path, she said.
The Red Trail has several entrances from the dirt road behind the ballfield and cell tower near the Bayside YMCA, Rondeau said.
“Follow the markers to reach the East Bay Bike Path,” she said. “The trail crosses over curious piles of broken and misshapen bricks discarded from the old brickyard drying kilns.”
