Barrington schools have received more good assessment-test score news.

The high school seniors who took the SAT test last year as juniors scored the highest overall in Rhode Island in the 2012 scores, according to the College Board. The Scholastic Aptitude Test scores were released Monday afternoon, Sept. 24.

The new SAT scores also recovered almost all the losses seen from 2010 to 2011 in Barrington.

The AP (Advanced Placement) test results for 2012 also have Barrington High School well ahead of every other school in the state.

SAT scores for 2012 show Barrington at 573 in reading, 588 in math and 559 in writing.

Only in the latter did Barrington not score the highest in RI – East Greenwich had a score of 563. But EG students scored a 556 in reading and a 561 in math.

Barrington's SAT scores in 2010 were 570 in reading, 589 in math and 563 in writing. The scores last year were 554 in reading, 576 in math and 559 in writing.

“It’s a good recovery,” said Barrington School Committee Chairman Patrick Guida. “We especially jumped back up in math.”

The math scores were a major concern of the School Committee last spring at the annual Report Night.

Guida seemed even more excited about the AP exam results.

“Each student took a little more than two exams (279 test takers and 561 exams),” he said.

And 479 of the 561 AP exams taken by the students showed scores of 3, 4 or 5 – the highest proficiency levels. That equates to 85 percent of the students.

Only East Greenwich was close to Barrington at 78 percent of exams scored at 3, 4, and 5. But, Guida said, look at the number of test takers (126) taking 251 exams – far less than half the number in Barrington.

Classical High School in Providence actually had the most test takers (333) and the most exams taken (615). But only 374 students scored 3, 4, or 5 in the tests – about 60 percent.
