Sushi Replaces Smoothies in Eatery

Sushi Express opens its doors at 306 County Road in Barrington.

Sushi has replaced smoothies in the corner location of the shopping center at 306 County Road in Barrington.

Sushi Express, Barrington’s first sushi restaurant, opened its doors yesterday, March 8, in the spot previously occupied by Smoothie Natural.

The Asian restaurant joins three other eateries, Chiazza Trattoria & Bar, Kozy Kitchen and Madigan’s Café & Wine Bar, in that shopping plaza.

Most of the restaurant’s business, however, is expected to be takeout, said Jason Yau, the owner. The eatery does have about 30 seats for sit-down diners and a big-screen TV hanging on the rear wall.

Yau completely redecorated the restaurant over the past few months. The restaurteur also owns several other Asian restaurants, including Asia Palace on North Main Street, Providence, and Asia Bistro on Dorrance Street, Providence.

Yau said he picked Barrington for a sushi restaurant because it seemed like a "nice place" for the concept. He has brought with him a chef, David Lin, with 18 years of experience preparing sushi dishes.

The restaurant also serves Hibachi entrees, more traditional seafood, and some Thai food, Yau said.

“Everything is homemade,” said Yau, who emigrated from China to Rhode Island in 1992. He lives in East Greenwich.

Yao will be applying for a Class BVL liquor license to sell beer and wine, including saki.

Hours are Monday through Thursday from 11 am to 10 pm, Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 10:30 pm and Sunday from 12 to 9 pm. See a story in eastbayri.com as well.
