Scorching Temps: Campers Make Do
Bayside Family YMCA accommodates high heat with alternative activities and water play.
Temperatures were already in the mid 90s by midmorning on Friday, July 22. But summer campers at the Bayside Family YMCA were keeping cool in the pool, heading to the sprinkler after some archery or art sessions, or enjoying indoor activities in the air conditioning.
Jason Piette, assistant childcare director, said the number of attendees was only slightly down from the 157 children registered to attend camp this week. The 'Y' was careful to take steps to ensure kids would be able to safely enjoy themselves, despite the heat, he said.
Campers still gathered under the trees outside to eat their midmorning snack and transition between activities. But an air-conditioned aerobics studio was commandeered for lunch as well as for some of the children to have a little downtime watching a movie later in the day.
An extended swim session, slip 'n slide, and other water games were also planned for the afternoon, and freeze pops were on hand for the kids to keep cool throughout the day.
Heat wave? No problem.
