Flash Poll: Who Won the Presidential Debate? Romney in Round One, say RI Insiders
Barack Obama and Mitt Romney duke it out in Denver, Colorado in first of three presidential debates.
In the first of three presidential debates held Wednesday night, Republican nominee Mitt Romney was the winner. That, according to our flash poll of Rhode Island Republican political influencers taken following the debate. By contrast, 25% of Rhode Island Democrats surveyed felt President Obama was the victor.
At the conclusion of the debate, Patch surveyed 52 Republicans and 51 Democrats, asking who they thought won the debate. Fifty-seven percent of the republicans surveyed said Romney won by a large margin, while 43% said he won by a slim margin.
When we asked the Democrats the same question, the results were divided. Fifty-percent responded that they were neutral as to who won the debate, while 25% admitted that Mitt Romney won the debate by a slim margin. Another 25% thought Obama won the debate by a wide margin.
Our next survey question asked both Democrats and Republicans who they thought the national media would declare the winner. Fifty-percent of the democrats surveyed thought the media would declare Obama the winner by a slim margin, while the other 50% were neutral. However, the Republicans we surveyed were not as confident with their candidate. Twenty-nine percent of our respondents thought Mitt Romney would be declared the winner by a slim margin, while another 29% were neutral for their response. Fourteen-percent thought Mitt Romney would be declared the winner by a wide margin, another 14% said they thought the media would declare Obama the winner by a wide margin. Fourteen-percent thought Obama would be declared the winner by a slim margin.
Our next question asked Rhode Island Republicans what moment stood out in the mind of conservatives during the debate. One response referred to the role of government. One respondent wrote: "Romney sounded Reaganesque when quoting the preamble to the constitution. Essentially stating that people need to be allowed to follow their dreams rather than be ruled by government." Two other respondents mentioned Romney's comments regarding the role of government. Another Republican response stated that "Obama distorting his own performance" was a moment that stood out.
When we asked Democrats what moment stood out in the mind of liberals and progressives in Rhode Island, one respondent said it was "how far Mitt Romney is out of touch with America, especially the middle class." Another person stated it was "moving medicare decisions to states." Another respondent said it was "Romney's voucher system for medicare."
Our political influencers were also asked if they thought their candidate's performance Wednesday night would make it more likely he will win the 2012 presidentional election. Eighty-Six-percent of the Repubicans said they somewhat agree that Romney could win based on this first debate. Fourteen- percent said they strongly agree. Democrats, however were not as confident about the President's performance Wednesday night. Fifty-percent said they somewhat agree that the president could win re-election based on his performance, while another 50% somewhat disagree that he could win a second term based on Wednesday night's performance.
Both parties replied at the end of the survey that they are looking forward to the next presidential debate which is scheduled for October 16th at Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York.
Our surveys are not a scientific random sample of any larger population but rather an effort to listen to a swatch of influential local Republican and Democratic activisits, party leaders and elected officials in Rhode Island. All of these individuals have agreed to participate in surveys, although not all responded to this week's questions.
Patch will be conducting Red Rhody and Blue Rhody surveys throughout 2012 in hopes of determining the true sentiment of conservatives and liberals on the ground in Rhode Island. If you are an activist, party leader or elected official and would like to take part in our surveys that lasts just a few minutes, please email Rick Couto, Regional Editor at rick.couto@patch.com.

=Any claim of "Our side WON!" without pointed reference is just partisan drivel.=
Ordinarily you would be quite correct, of course- both sides always think their guy won.
But not this time.
I didn't watch, after the introduction, but before bed I checked in briefly to see if any crazy drama had occurred. I happened to tune into CNBC and got the liberal radicals , Rachel Madow, Chris Matthews, Al Sharpton.
(Not being partisan here- the Fox conservative radicals are as bad or worse. Ok worse.)
And the comentators were standing there, in shock, with their mouths hanging open, moaning about how badly their guy had done, and what the consequences would be. I couldn't beleive it.

@Naome Lixes ... Your dilusional. It's tough to determine who won based upon one debate, even 3 debates. ALL of the facts have not been addressed..are not complete. Are you going to vote for someone who says he'll do this, that without a an exacting plan. Voting for someone who tells you to vote for him then he will tell you just exactly what he is going to do with the economy, health care, military spending etc. after he is in office. What do the people do who are "disposed of" because they cannot afford health care, insurance. They are being told to go to the emergency rooms to be cared for. Just how much care do you think the hospitals are going to give a person at that point. And instead of having to wait for medical care at these facilities, which now takes up to 12 hours to get medical help, you and others will have to wait possibly one or two days for the same service. Where would YOU go? Oh, you'd ask your parents to foot the bill. Now that's what I call freeloading. I see no common sense in your decision. I'll have to give you this, though, Your man did appear to control the debate ... to a degree. If your man does win this election ... I would certainly like to see your reaction and decision making after he has been in office for four years. Especially too, if you have any serious medical problems or is and when you get to retirement age. Let's see then if you think that you chose the right man for the job. As 'you' people say ... "Just sayin'.

Here's something to note:
"Another 25% thought Obama won the debate by a wide margin."
Even President Obama knows he lost badly, yet 25% of these Democrat survey takers are blind to that fact. The scariest part is who took part in this survey. Recognize anyone?:

Democrat Kristin Powers - "Romney was strong - Obama was weak. Romney was a leader - Obama was disengaged."
Democrat Andrew Sullivan - "Obama looks sad, confused, lame. He choked. He lost the debate. He may have lost the election."
If his own people think he lost...

One debate does make a difference, especially since your man, who had no protection in as far as a Teleprompter, clapping media surrogates, or other devices that he can view while giving his "Canned" opinions, got totally out debated and out classed by a candidate who has been through it before and has “Business” skills.
He couldn’t even look at Romney as he was being schooled in economics!
Get over it, your man got spanked big time by a man who knows how to address problems, who knows how to address issues, who knows how to put forward a plan and follow through with it!

I think Obama painted a good picture about why health care needs government regulation to keep sick people from being subjected to heartless, profit-driven decisions to cut them off when they need it most. Medicare even more so because many old people have no resources.

Romney bounded off the stage on Wednesday night with a wide grin from cheek to cheek, proud of himself for delivering all the ‘zingers’ his staff wrote up for him.
But here’s the problem: he just made stuff up. By one count, he lied 27 times in 38 minutes! On Medicare, on Obamacare, on taxes, on Wall Street Reform, on you name it... Mitt said whatever came to his mind just to to score political points.
Without the folks from Fact Check at your side...you can't trust what Romney says. That's not the kind of President I want. Bush was like that and then he got his ass kicked on foreign policy and again on the domestic economy. Two wars and the worst recession since the Great Depression.

I agree, Mew. Romney won, but it was a victory based on debate and not facts. No tax cuts for the rich? Coverage for pre-existing conditions in his plan? I don't think so. Romney blatantly lied about these issues so he could win the debate. I would like to see Obama hone his debating skills for the next debate...and I would like Romney to focus less on lies to win the debate (I have to believe that most Americans in the end won't let him get away with that!) on more on his actual policies and plans for the US in the next 4 years.

Ted, what Gov Romney ACTUALLY said was that trickle down GOVERNMENT was not working, and we need to stimulate the business sector to solve the budget problem in government - more people and businesses paying taxes (even at a lower rate) will mean more overall revenue, and of course more people would solve their own budget problems as well with a growing economy. Thats what he said. Whether you agree or not. Obama for his part spoke to the need for government regulation of health care insurance so people who were left out (such as those with pre-existing conditions or those who have reached some "cap" as many insurers now have) before Obamacare, will not be left out. Also a valid position. Any use of the term "bully" is just the tired old liberal trick of demeaning who they dont agree with (and often dont understand as you didnt). No one falls for that any more. (MY EDITED FOR CLARITY)
Ted Ackley

He can dress it up how he wants it's still trickle down if the ultra wealthy aren't paying a fair share for everything they get. Just more dishonesty in my opinion. Just like his "12 million new jobs" is bs. I know when I am being bullied, calling me a tired old liberal is case and point.

So if you right want your Romney and want your vote to count I would move to another part of the country. Like down south where the real welfare states are while we in the north pay taxes to our country the south takes more in welfare taxes than the north. If the south will rise again it will be at the north expense. Check the facts the north pays for all the rebulican welfare states in the south.

Whew, a lot of comments here.......If you want Obama out, you have to show it with votes. The polls have him up by 30 points in RI and 20 points in MA. Even if he wins back the WH, if you take away his "little people" like Whitehouse, Cicilline and Langevin, it would be enough to override his veto. The House is already gone and the Senate it up for grabs.
I have completed a study on Whitehouse's votes during Obamacare - he was throwing your rights under the bus. Wouldn't back up your 2nd amendment rights, throwing the vets under thb us, exempting himself and his cronies from Obamacare and Medicare! They also plan on cutting Medicare by 27% next year. They won't own up to that one. This is all available on the web under US Senate. Democrats are socialists and are ruining this wonderful country of ours. $6Trillion in debt under Obama! He has blood on his hands with that US Ambassador. The last President to have this honor was Carter. Compare the records of those two losers and you will know how to vote. Enough of this madness!

Romney is going to get this country going again by jump starting our energy resources, and also put the EPA out of business!
Keystone Pipeline, Kentucky coal, Midwest oil and gas, relaxing drilling rights in the gulf coast, all will put folks back to work and finally separate us from our esteemed "Partners" in the middle east. (All of who would like us DEAD rather than accept BILLIONS from us in loyalty payments, and according to the Dems, lets reach out to them and show them how nice we are right)?
What Obama has done to absolutely decimate the coal industry over the last two years in this country is criminal, yet he pushes for dream technologies to pull us through this, while in the meantime, putting thousands of coal miners in the unemployment lines!?
And they claim positive job growth by showing their numbers are accurate when doing a phone survey of 60,000 people! (Yeah OK, we’re not too stupid to believe this crap right?)
Then, after the survey, they claim we now, all if a sudden, have a 0.3 % drop in unemployment and have revised data in the June, July and August employment figures to boot! Give me a break.........
