Barrington Police Sgt. Joseph Andreozzi, 45, has been suspended without pay after being charged on Nov. 16 with obstructing an investigation into the domestic disorderly conduct charge lodged against him last August by the RI State Police and cyber-stalking.

The new charges by the State Police were filed on Nov. 16 at the hearing on the initial domestic charge, according to Lt. Benjamin Barney of the State Police.

“It was amended at the hearing,” said Lt. Barney.

The initial domestic charge was dismissed after an investigation by the State Police computer crimes unit and the Attorney General’s Office.

Barrington Police Chief John LaCross reported the suspension without pay on Monday morning, Nov. 26.

The charge of “obstructing the judicial system” is a felony, Lt. Barney said. The cyber-stalking charge is a misdemeanor on first offense.

Both charges will be going before a grand jury, Lt. Barney said. He could not elaborate, he said.

Andreozzi was arraigned and released on personal recognizance, Lt. Barney said.

Andreozzi was arrested initially on Aug. 30 and charged with domestic disorderly conduct after he allegedly threatened his ex-wife on the phone and then went to her home.

Adreozzi pleaded not guilty in court on Aug. 30. He was put on administrative leave with pay at that point in time, LaCross said.

“He was on leave for 15 days until restraining orders against him were dropped,” LaCross said.

The suspension without pay is “based on the new charges,” said LaCross.

The State Police have been handling the case to preserve impartiality.
