New Lavin's Marina in Barrington to Reopen by May 1

Barrington commercial developer Joseph Ruggiero refurbishing marina by dredging cove and installing new bulkhead.

The new Lavin's Marina on Bullock's Point Cove should open for business again by May 1.

New owner Joseph Ruggiero of Barrington bought the marina on Shore Drive from longtime owner Bob Lavin last December for $2.3 million.

Ruggiero, owner of commercial developer Ruggiero Properties, is spending another million dollars to dredge the cove, install a new bulkhead of fiberglass vinyl seaward of the old timber bulkhead, and build a new boat ramp, he said.

About 11,000 cubic yards of material has been taken out of the cove, said Ruggiero.

"It's seven-feet deep all around now," he said.

The new depth will allow the marina to handle bigger boats up to 40-feet long, Ruggiero said. With the bigger boats will come fewer slips, however.

Lavin's could handle about 165 boats, Lavin said. The new marina will probably have about 20 less slips.

Ruggiero said he expects the bulkhead work to be done within a few days. He plans to move new docks into place as early as this week. (See a video of workers installing the new bulkhead.)

Lavin said he is helping Ruggiero make the transition to marina owner. He'll then retire "to my boat," he said. "I got out one time last year."

"It's time," Lavin said. "I've been around this place for 49 years."

Ruggiero said he might start a yacht club at the marina. It would be open to members and guests.

The developer also plans to build 10 homes on vacant land on the marina property off of Narragansett Avenue between Woodbine and Latham streets. The property is zoned R10.

Right now, though, Ruggiero is concentrating on the marina's refurbishment. Boats should be pulling up to the new marina's docks soon.
