Mobile 'Y' Brings Fun, Exercise to You

Bayside Family YMCA in Barrington is one of five Greater Providence 'Ys' to have a van that extends their reach.

You can’t get to the Bayside Family YMCA in Barrington? Let the mobile ‘Y’ come to you. All over Bristol County.

“We can do group exercise on the road, such as pilates or Tai Chi,” said Mike Squatrito, children's program director for the Bayside Family YMCA.

But that’s hardly the extent of  “Y on the Move,” he said.

You have probably seen the white, aqua and blue YMCA van at school functions, such as the recent Sowams School October Festival.

“We used it for amplification and karaoke there,” Squatrito said.

Indeed, the van transports an amplifier, CD player, speakers and a microphone to create a mobile DJ system, he said. You can also plug in your iPod.

The van also carts around plenty of balls, inflatables, cones, and other play equipment and life-size gear, Squatrito said, including the very popular parachute and Twister game.

Want to throw a birthday party that your children won’t forget for a long time? Call the YMCA and rent the van.

“Everything is movement-based,” he said. “We want you to burn energy.”

The mobile ‘Y’ allows children, in particular, “to experience things that we did as young kids,” Squatrito said.

The van rolls up. YMCA employees roll out the hula hoops and ring toss game and the obstacle course. It doesn’t take long to see the kids making up their own fun and games by doing what they do instinctively.

“It’s an extension of what we do at the ‘Y’,” he said. “We can have more impact out in the community. We bring the YMCA to you.”
