Mercury Spills at St. Andrew's School
No one reported affected; RI DEM and Health Departments are working with Clean Harbors to clean up the spill.
All students were evacuated from the Brown Science Building at the St. Andrew’s School in Barrington earlier today, Jan. 11, after a vial of mercury was dropped on a classroom floor.
No reports of students and staff with any effects have been reported, according to officials. But all the shoes of students and faculty who entered the classroom after the spill are being tested for mercury.
The school reported the spill to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) and the Rhode Island Department of Health (HEALTH). Staff from DEM are taking air samples to identify any areas of potential contamination.
Clean Harbors is working with school officials to clean the affected building. HEALTH staff is on site to ensure that all health and safety protocols are followed during the incident response.
