Man Faces Fraudulent Check Charge
Barrington police picked up Michael Zompa, 53, of Sowams Road, on a warrant after a vehicle matching his Jetta reportedly was seen driving erratically on Interstate 195.
A Barrington man, 53, was picked up on a District Court bench warrant on Friday night, Oct. 5, to face a charge of issuing fraudulent checks.
Michael J. Zompa, of 85 Sowams Road, was stopped at 9:47 pm by Barrington police after a vehicle matching the description of his Volkswagen Jetta reportedly was seen driving erratically on Interstate 195. The vehicle also reportedly struck a construction barrier on the highway.
Zompa’s vehicle was stopped near Sowams Nursery on Sowams Road by Patrol Officers Timothy Oser and Walter Larson. It had a sidelight not working, believed at the time to be caused by hitting the construction barrier.
As it turned out, police officers did not have the right vehicle. But a run of Zompa’s name in the criminal database found that a warrant for his arrest on the fraudulent check charge had been issued by the Warwick Police Department. He also was driving without a license, according to the Barrington police report.
Zompa was taken to the Barrington Police Station and held for pickup by a Warwick police officer. He was released to Warwick police at 12:07 am on Saturday.
