Local Legislators Coming to Library

Common Cause Rhode Island is hosting a community forum in Barrington on Saturday that will bring local legislators to chat with you before the next General Assembly session starts.

Common Cause Rhode Island will give you a chance on Saturday morning, Nov. 10, to chat with state legislators from Barrington, Warren and Bristol.

“We want to get people together with legislators early on in the process,” said Caroline Mailloux of Common Cause. “We want to begin conversations before the General Assembly session starts.”

The community forum will run from 10 am to noon at the Barrington Public Library. It will focus on issues of government transparency and accountability in Rhode Island.

All of the legislators in the three towns have been invited, Mailloux said. As of Thursday, five legislators had committed to attending, including Sen. David Bates of Barrington, Sen. Walter Felag of Warren, and Rep. Jan Malik of Warren.

The event is open to anyone who wants to meet the recently elected legislators and talk about their plans for the upcoming legislative session outside of the recent campaign season, said Mailloux.

It will be an informal meet-and-greet and question-and-answer session. Coffee and doughnuts will be served.

“It’s also part of our effort to get into the community outside of the State House,” Mailloux said. “We like to describe ourselves as ‘convenors of conversation’.”

Common Cause Rhode Island describes itself as a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to the promotion of representative democracy by ensuring open, ethical, accountable and effective government processes at the local, state and national levels by educating and mobilizing the citizens of Rhode Island, according to its website.

I would hope our legislators have already figured out why RI sits at the bottom of the fiscal barrel in virtually any measure.

The real issue is this: When will our legislators find the courage to admit that if they themselves wanted to start a business, RI would be one of the last places they would want to invest their own capital.

So let's start with a simple premise. What would you, as a legislator, change if you wanted to start your own business here. And please don't say that you would give more taxpayer money to the EDC.

It's all about private sector job creation.
