Is Unlocked-Car 'Bandit' Back?

A theft from an unlocked car at a Washington Road home early this week brings to almost 30 the number of similar larcenies in Barrington since August.

Barrington’s unlocked-car “bandit” appears to have struck again.

A Washington Road man called Barrington police at 2:30 pm on Tuesday, Dec. 6, to report a larceny of items from his motor vehicle overnight on Monday, Dec. 5. It was parked unlocked in his driveway, which was described as well-lighted, police said.

The theft brings to approximately 30 the number of unlocked cars ransacked in Barrington since the middle of August.

Seven thefts were reported in late September. Nine thefts were reported in mid-August. Eleven more were reported at the end of October. One was reported in late November. This theft from an unlocked car is the first one reported in December.

Items reported stolen have included GPS systems, a camera, DVDs, movies for DVDs, sunglasses, an iPad connector, laptop computers, iPods, a silver watch, hoop earrings, headphones, a backpack and cash, including loose change.

Among the items reported taken from the vehicle this time are a Garmin GPS device, two pairs of sunglasses, and a medical device valued at more than $300.

Police Chief John LaCross has said:  “Don’t leave anything in your car and don’t leave your car unlocked. Take everything in the house.”
