'I Spy' Film Series Offers Richard Burton
The Thursday evening series continues with 'The Spy Who Came In From the Cold', starring Richard Burton and Claire Bloom.
The Barrington library's “I Spy Film Series” continues on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7 pm with the classic 1965 Richard Burton movie, "The Spy Who Came in From the Cold."
The "I Spy" series then runs Thursday evenings (no film on Thanksgiving) until Dec. 15.
Burton, Oskar Werner and Martin Ritt will "take you into the dark and gritty world of the 1960s Eastern bloc," said Amy Greer, community services librarian.
"Alec Leamas (Burton), a British Intelligence agent getting ready to retire, must undertake a final dangerous assignment before he can come in from the cold, so he poses as a drunk in East Germany to gain information about other spies who've been captured," Greer said. "Leamas is soon thrown in jail, where he's grilled about his association with British agents."
Claire Bloom co-stars in this riveting thriller adapated from a novel by John Le Carre.
“And on the very last night (of the series), come and listen to a real, working spy talk about the truths and fictions of cinematic espionage,” Greer said.
A member of the Naval War College espionage faculty will make the presentation, she said.
