'Housekeeper' Arrested for Theft in E.P.
An East Providence 'cleaning lady' who was arrested by Barrington police for stealing jewelry from a Barrington woman has been charged with two counts of larceny for stealing jewelry and silver in East Providence.
An East Providence woman previously arrested for larceny in Barrington while working as a "cleaning lady" was arrested Wednesday, Jan. 23, by East Providence police and charged with two felony counts of larceny over $1,500 each while working as a "housekeeper" there.
Maria F. Gagnon, 56, of 10 Heath Court in East Providence, admitted to stealing numerous pieces of jewelry and a silver dining plate with a value of more than $5,000, according to Det. Capt. Richard Frazier of the East Providence Police Department.
She was arrested by Barrington police on Jan. 4 and charged with stealing numerous pieces of jewelry from a Barrington woman. See the Patch story. As a result of that arrest, four Riverside people came forward to report thefts of jewelry from their homes. See that Patch story.
“At the time of the two thefts” in East Providence, said Frazier, “Gagnon was employed by the homeowners as a housekeeper.”
The first theft was reported to Eas Providence police way back on Aug. 29, 2008. Gagnon stole a $3,000 bracelet from an elderly homeowner on Beverly Road.
The second theft was reported to the police on Jan. 4 of this year. Gagnon stole the jewelry and a silver dining plate worth $2,000 from an 81-year-old resident of Robin Hood Drive.
“Our investigation is ongoing at this time,” said Frazier. “We believe there is at least one more victim, who is away on vacation, who has not yet reported the theft.”
Gagnon was released from custody today and will be formally arraigned in 6th District Court on Jan. 31, said Frazier.
