A 76-year-old Barrington man interrupted a broad-daylight burglary of his Wampanoag Trail home last week. He still lost more than $2,000 worth of electronics and jewelry.

Donald Stevens was changing the oil in his car in the attached garage about 2:45 pm when he heard some noise. He thought it was the wind on the blustery Thursday, Jan. 30, said Barrington Police Chief John LaCross.

Then he heard more noise and voices as well, said LaCross. He left the garage and walked to the front of his house, where he saw a blue-gray car with Massachusetts license plates parked in his circular driveway. 

The car “sped off” when he appeared, said LaCross. Stevens didn’t have time to get the number on the license plate.

The man then glanced at the front of his house. The front door was broken open. He walked to the door and yelled inside. He heard someone moving around.

Stevens walked right back to his garage and called 911, said the police chief, saying that he believed a burglar might still be in the house. Two patrol officers and two sergeants responded to the call within minutes. 

The police found no one inside in the house. The burglar apparently ran out a back door and across the back yard to get away before they arrived. A canvas of the area located no one or the blue-gray car.

Reported missing from the house were two Toshiba laptop computers, a Kindle E-reader, an Olympus camera and a jewelry box containing an assortment of items, said LaCross.
