It's hump day for school vacation week. Are your children growing weary of their newest video games or toys yet? Maybe they're getting on your nerves already?

Don't fret. We've got some answers. Take a look at this guide for new adventures to share with your children this week — both indoors and outdoors.

Wednesday, Dec. 29

• 10 am to 3:30 pm – Learn about "Bikes & Other Wheels" when you visit the Barrington Preservation Society Museum, located on the lower level of the Barrington Public Library, 281 County Road. The exhibit features bikes from the 1930s to the 1960s, plus a pram from 1931, and roller skates with wooden wheels from 1941. Admission is free.
• 10 am to 3 pm – Enjoy nature crafts and stories at the Audubon Society of Rhode Island Environmental Education Center, 1401 Hope St., Bristol. Crafts are available anytime, stories will be at 11 am and 2.30 pm. Free with center admission.

• 10:30 am – Humorous and heartwarming mime stories, titled "Laughter is the Best Medicine," for kids 5 and up will be performed by Robert Rivest, at the Barrington Public Library, 281 County Road. Free.
• 12:30 to 8 pm -- Enjoy girls' and boys' high school basketball at first day of the third annual Barrington Boosters Holiday Tournament at Barrington High School. Six games -- three girls and three boys -- will be played. Admission is $5 for the entire day.
• 1 pm – Meet a living dinosaur relative who usually comes out at night during "A Day With The Dinosaurs" at the Audubon Society of Rhode Island Environmental Education Center, 1401 Hope St., Bristol. Discover how rocks can provide information about dinosaurs. Cost is $2 and registration is required. Visit www.asri.org or call 949-5454 x 3017 to register.

• 2 to 4 pm – Bring your sneakers and your own basketball with your name on it to an open basketball session run by the Barrington Recreation Department, at the Barrington Middle School, 261 Middle Highway.

Thursday, Dec. 30

• 10 to 11 am – Meet and learn about chinchillas, hedgehogs, snakes, frogs, lizards, turtles, and more at Weaver Library, 41 Grove Ave, East Providence, during "Animal Experiences." The program is free and geared to ages 3 and up.
• 10 am to 3 pm – Enjoy nature crafts and stories at the Audubon Society of Rhode Island Environmental Education Center, 1401 Hope St., Bristol. Crafts are available anytime, stories will be at 11am and 2.30pm. Free with center admission.

• 12:30 to 8 pm -- Enjoy girls' and boys' high school basketball at the second day of the third annual Barrington Boosters Holiday Tournament at Barrington High School. Six games -- three girls and three boys -- will be played. Admission is $5 for the entire day.
• 1 pm – Kids 7 and up can learn what goes into their fish sticks when they get to dissect a fish at the Audubon Society of Rhode Island Environmental Education Center, 1401 Hope St., Bristol. Kid size tools will be provided, and "dress for mess" is suggested. Not recommended for anyone with seafood allergies. Cost is $2 and registration is required. • 1 pm – ET is phoning home from the Barrington Public Library auditorium, at a free screening put on by the Barrington Recreation Department.
• 1 pm and 2 pm - Sparky's Puppets invite audience participation and lots of laughs for all ages as they perform "The Gingerbread Man," "Little Red Riding Hood," "The Three Pigs" and "The Three Billy Goats Gruff," at The Providence Children's Museum, 100 South St. The program is geared to ages 3 – 11, and is free with museum admission of $8.50.

Friday, Dec. 31

• 10 am to noon – Enjoy nature crafts and stories at the Audubon Society of Rhode Island Environmental Education Center, 1401 Hope St., Bristol. Crafts are available anytime, one nature story will be at 11.30am. Free with center admission.
• 10 am – Kids can participate in a nature walk to search for signs of winter animals and observe how nature has changed during winter at the Audubon Society of Rhode Island Environmental Education Center, 1401 Hope St., Bristol. Warm clothing and winter footwear will be necessary. Cost is $2 and registration is required. Visit www.asri.org or call 949-5454 x 3017 to register.

• 8 pm to 12:30 am – Barrington high-schoolers are invited to ring in the New Year with their friends at the Bayside YMCA. The party is sponsored by the BAY Team, Barrington's alcohol- and drug-free community coalition. The swimming pool will be open and there will be video games and dodge ball to play, with plenty of food. The party is free. But you must register in advance. Call 246-1212.

You should spend some time outside this week, especially with plenty of new snow on the ground. Suicide Hill on the Rhode Island Country Club golf course is always a great spot for sledding, tubing and sliding. The Primrose Hill School playground has a sledding and sliding hill for the younger set.

If you don't mind breaking a trail in fresh snow, there are plenty of walking trails in Barrington. Try Sowams Woods off Washington Road at South Lake Drive, Tall Cedars beginning either at Townsend or Crown Avenues, the Hampden Meadows Greenway beginning at Kent Pond off of Kent Street and Haines State Park off of Narragansett Avenue or Washington Road.

Some other suggestions to keep the kids occupied and entertained this week:

• Have a family game night.
• Enroll the kids in Express Swimming Lessons at the Bayside YMCA (call 245-2444 for more information or to register)
• Take the kids to indoor mini-golf or a movie.

The Barrington Recreation Department has discount passes for Dudek's Bowling Alley, 417 Child St., Warren. You can get them on the Town of Barrington website at www.barrington.ri.gov.  

The Barrington Public Library loans out passes providing free and discounted admission to various museums and zoos throughout Rhode Island and nearby areas. Check with the library daily to see what's available.
