Fill Up on Soup, Music at Cookoff

Heartworks of Barrington is raising funds for those facing the challenge of grief, loss and medical illness at its annual Soup & Chili Cookoff.

The third annual Heartworks Soup & Chili Cookoff is Saturday. It offers plenty of music to go along with homemade soup and chili.

The fundraiser features six homemade soups and six homemade chilis made by Barrington Hearworks' members and friends. It runs from 7 to 11:30 pm at The Event Room in Warren.

Music will be provided by a Barrington band, Drowne Jenny. The three-man group performed at the first cookoff in 2010.

Grapes & Grains of Barrington is providing the beverages.

Heartworks is an act of kindness group made up of 200 women in Barrington.

“Our mission is to reach out to those experiencing unexpected life challenges,” said Amy Ames, the founder.  “It was started as a result of the outpouring of kindness that America experienced after the 9-11 attacks on the world trade center."

“There are now eight Heartworks groups in the nation engaging over 750 women,” she said “Proceeds from this event will go directly to help those families in town and in our surrounding community experiencing the effects of grief, loss and medical challenges.”

“What I love about this event is that it is not exclusive to any particular group, so you get to meet a wide variety of people,” said Suzette Stephens of Heartworks. “Sometimes in a small community such as Barrington, you just see the same grouping of people.”

“The cookoff is a good time for a good cause,” she said. “The money raised goes to a variety of folks who need help.  And the food is always amazing and the band is great. I love ending the evening dancing with friends old and new.”

“We have volunteers making soup and chili for up to 150 people, community groups creating the posters and decorations, people loaning crock pots, tables, lights and ladels,” said Beth Silveria of Heartworks. “This is all before the event.”

“Even in the planning stages, the goodness in all has shone through,” she said.

The Event Room at Cutler Mills sits behind Tom’s Market at 16 Cutler St. in Warren.

Cost of the cookoff is $25 per person paid in advance or $30 at the door. Mail a check to P.O. Box 292 or drop it off at 3 Surrey Road, Barrington, by end of the day on Thursday.

All are welcome! Just want to note it is $30 at the door, not $60. Thanks for a great article Bill!
