Never throw a can of orange soda at a police car in Barrington.

An 18-year-old Barrington boy now faces a drunk-driving charge and two other alcohol charges.

A 16-year-old juvenile in the vehicle with him faces vandalism and disorderly conduct charges. He allegedly tossed the can of soda.

Their vehicle was spotted on New Meadow Road by a patrol officer late Saturday night, Nov. 17, said Barrington Police Chief John LaCross.  The officer was responding to a report from a caller that a white liquid was tossed at his car in that neighborhood.

The patrol officer pulled up behind the boys’ green Honda about 10:39 pm. Out the window came the can of orange soda. It busted a side mirror on the cop car, said LaCross.

The boys’ vehicle soon was pulled over. The driver, Bradley A. Starr, 18, of 4 Carriage Trail, admitted to drinking two beers and smoking marijuana about an hour earlier.

He had trouble with the field sobriety test, LaCross said. Found inside the Honda was an open container of beer.

The boys denied, however, that they threw things out of the car, despite the damage to the patrol car.

Starr was arraigned at the police station on three charges: the DUI, refusal to submit to a chemical test, and the presence of alcohol while driving or riding in a motor vehicle.

The juvenile faces three charges: throwing an object at a police or fire vehicle, vandalism and malicious damage to property, and disorderly conduct.

Another juvenile boy in the car was not charged, said LaCross.

The two juveniles were released to their parents about 12:30 am. Starr was held overnight in a jail cell and released early Sunday morning.
