'Cleaning Lady' Charged as Jewelry Thief
An East Providence woman, 56, has been charged with stealing numerous pieces of jewelry from a home she cleaned in Barrington.
An East Providence woman who works as a cleaning lady was arrested by Barrington police on Friday, Jan. 4, as a jewelry thief.
Maria Gagnon, 56, of 10 Heath Court, was charged with larceny over $1,500, a felony, for allegedly stealing "numerous pieces of jewlery" from a Barrington woman. An arrest warrant was issued on Thursday, Jan. 3.
"The victim hired Maria Gagnon approximately two months ago to clean her home and noticed several rings missing after a recent cleaning," said Barrington Police Chief John LaCross.
"Police located some of the missing jewelry at a pawn shop in Pawtucket," he said in a news release. "The pawn shop’s records show Maria Gagnon sold the missing jewelry on 12/26/12."
"The victim later identified the jewelry as belonging to her," LaCross said. "Police confiscated several pieces of jewelry that were located at Maria Gagnon's home. Some of the jewelry was identified as the victim’s, however, several other pieces are being held by police in the event additional victims come forward."
Records show the defendant has sold numerous pieces of jewelry to local pawn shops dating back to October of 2012, said LaCross.
Gagnon would not disclose any other house she cleaned in the past, the police chief said.
Gagon was arraigned in 6th District Court on one count of felony larceny. She was released on $10,000 personal recognizance.
