Coin-Collecting Doctor's Case Put Off

Barrington hand surgeon, Dr. Arnold-Peter Weiss, has his case of allegedly peddling a looted ancient coin continued until July.

The Barrington hand surgeon who faces a charge of allegedly trying to sell a looted ancient coin appeared in Manhattan criminal court on Wednesday, March 21, according to the Chasing Aphrodite blog.

The case against Dr. Arnold-Peter Weiss was continued until July 3. No additional documents were filed by the New York District Attorney’s office, according to the blog. And there have been few public developments since then.

Weiss, 51, of Nayatt Road, is a partner in University Orthopedics and a member of the Brown Medical School faculty. He was arrested on January 3 in New York City. The former trustee at RISD is being charged with criminal possession of stolen property in the second degree.

Weiss allegedly attempted to sell the 4th century BC silver coin at an auction in the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel on Jan. 3 this year. The coin, unearthed several years ago, is reportedly the property of the Italian government, which cooperated in the investigation.
