Candidates Can Ring Your Doorbell
There is nothing illegal about a candidate going door to door in Barrington during a political campaign, but don't drop literature into a mailbox.
School Committee candidate Paula Dominguez has every right to campaign door to door and drop off campaign literature just like all candidates for political office in Barrington.
“She is allowed to ring doorbells just like everyone else,” said Barrington Solicitor Mike Ursillo. “There is nothing illegal about that."
Dominguez was rapped by a Patch comment made by someone who used the pseudonym "DanComment" on Thursday morning after a story on her push to get more arts into the schools was posted on Patch.
The comment: “Isn't she the one who's been vandalizing our houses with the junk mail flyers she's hung on our doors illegally?”
The comment is completely off target.
“She has the First Amendment right,” said Ursillo. “No one can stop you from ringing doorbells. All candidates can do it.”
Ursillo said: “I am not aware of any ordinance or law” that would prohibit Dominguez or any candidate from going door to door.
"It's gone all the way to the Supreme Court,” he said.
The only thing that cannot be done is to drop off flyers in mailboxes, Ursillo said. Only the U.S. Post Office is allowed to use those boxes.
Dominguez said she had checked with the Town Clerk’s office and the Barrington police chief about solicitation laws in Barrington before starting her door-to-door campaigning. She was told pretty much the same thing by them, she said.
“I plan to continue campaigning door to door,” she said.

Good for you, Paula! I know you have great qualifications for a spot on the School Committee, and I wish you well.

Only in Barrington would a candidate going door to door to converse with the public and gain support would be an issue.
Time to re-evaluate your life if this is a problem for you.
