Caller Alerts Cops to Drunk Driver

Police charge a Barrington woman, 46, with driving drunk after a call is made to dispatch alerting officers to a possible DUI.

Barrington police received another call from a resident last week about a possible intoxicated driver. It resulted in a Barrington woman being pulled off the road and charged with drunk driving.

Diane M. Coelho, 46, of 4 Zompa Road, reportedly was driving intoxicated on Wednesday morning, Nov. 28. Her vehicle was pulled over at 11 am by a patrol officer at the intersection of Middle Highway and Lincoln Avenue after it made a wide right turn, according to Barrington Police Chief John LaCross.

Coelho demonstrated the classic appearance and physical behaviors of being intoxicated, according to the police report. She failed the field sobriety test.

The patrol officer also found in the back seat a glass holding a liquid that appeared to be a mix of pineapple and vodka, LaCross said.

Coelho took one Breathalyzer test to determine her blood-alcohol level, LaCross said. It registered .176 or almost twice the legal limit. She refused a second chemical test.

Her rights were read to her at the scene and at the police station, where she was taken to be arraigned, according to the police report. At the station, she began complaining of pains in her chest, LaCross said. She was transported to Rhode Island Hospital by Barrington EMTs.

Coelho faces a DUI charge and refusing to submit to a chemical test.

Thank you to the caller who reported the driver. I drive my two babies home from school at that time and I hate to think what could've happened.

I passed by the stop and was alarmed at the sight. Grateful that she was taken off the road. I had my two babies in the car after music class. Evidence that you should always speak up when it involves the safety of others.
