Blaze Sparked by Fireworks

An investigation into the fire that destroyed a Maple Avenue shed last week indicates that fireworks lit earlier in the day may have started the fire.

An investigation into the fire that destroyed a detached shed or garage at the rear of a house at 542 Maple Ave. last Wednesday evening, Nov. 23, indicates that fireworks may have sparked the blaze.

A juvenile who lives in the house told police that he had lit fireworks earlier in the evening in a trash can in the shed.

The shed had electrical power from a cord running to it from the house. But the fire did not seem to be caused by a short in the power cord.

The fire was reported about 8:52 pm. The fire was extinguished completely about an hour later.

Hot tub used without OK

Barrington police received a report on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 24, of an unauthorized use of a hot tub at a home at 200 New Meadow Road.

The caller said she believes several people removed the cover and used the outdoor tub sometime overnight. She said a CD player attached to the tub also was broken and a motion light in the back yard was deactivated.

Police said they received a separate report of loud music coming from the direction of that home by a neighbor at approximately 4:30 am. The homeowner did not hear the music, police said

Damage to the hot tub and CD players is estimated at $200.

Report of handgun shots false

Barrington police responded on Wednesday evening, Nov. 23, to a report of a possible handgun being discharged at a house on Prospect Street.

The 6:20 pm report came after a woman said she heard a “popping” noise that she thought resembled shots being fired from a handgun, police said. The sound she heard, according to police, was the sound of tires being slashed with a knife.

The noise followed an argument between two men over money reportedly being owed to one by the other. The victim of the tire-slashing told police he did not wish to make a statement or pursue charges.

Bicycle, iPod turned in to police

Barrington police received two reports of found property on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 27.

At 12:16 pm, an officer was flagged down by a person on the East Bay Bike Path near West Street who found a bicycle.

At 1:38 pm, a Fountain Avenue resident reported that they found an iPod near their home.
