Barrington Women NCAA Rowing Titlists

Katie Rand and Petra Weiss row on national champion Brown University women's crew team.

Two Barrington women played key roles for the Brown University women’s crew team, which won its seventh NCAA title in 15 years last weekend in California, according to the brownbears.com web site.

Head coach John Murphy and assistant coach Phoebe Murphy, both of Barrington, saw their Varsity 8 rowers, including Katie Rand, a junior, and Petra Weiss, a senior, come from behind to take their first title since 2008.

The national crown was decided by the narrowest of margins, .05 seconds, in the final race of the day, the Varsity 8 team, against Stanford University. Rand rowed in that race.

Weiss, who rows on the second Varsity 8 team, also received the Elite 88 award at the 2011 national rowing championship. The award recognizes a rower who has reached “the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level…while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers,” according to brownbears.com.
