Barrington Joins 'Earth Hour 2013'
The Barrington Town Council took no official action but it does urge you to join the town in celebrating Earth Hour 2013 on Saturday, March 23.
Please consider turning off all your non-essential lights on Saturday, March 23 between 8:30 and 9:30 pm.
The Barrington Town Council made that request Monday night. It’s the annual Earth Hour event that 7,000 other cities and towns around the world are supporting.
Earth Hour began in 2007. It’s a worldwide event organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to encourage households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change, according to the Earth Hour website.
Town Manager Peter DeAngelis Jr. said Barrington can’t turn off streetlights because of safety issues. Most of them are sensor controlled anyway. But the town will turn off whatever lights it can in buildings to support the effort.
“It’s really more about awareness,” he said.
